The UF CTSI Community Scientist Program

The University of Florida’s CTSI Community Scientist Program builds on a tradition of involving patients and families in research. Initially focused on parents of children with special health needs, the program now includes diverse community members.

What Does a Community Scientist Do?

Community scientists engage in various activities, including:

  • Reviewing recruitment materials (flyers, forms, messages)
  • Advising on public communication of research findings
  • Assisting with presentations
  • Participating in study teams, workgroups, or committees

Program Highlights

  • Innovation Studios: Roundtable discussions with stakeholders to refine research proposals.
  • Patient Scientists: Individuals recruited to participate actively in research, leading to the creation of the Citizen Scientist Program.
  • Diverse Engagement: Collaborations with patients, community clinicians, and other stakeholders to improve research quality, relevance, and health outcomes.
